I worked for myself as a grocery store owner many years ago.  When I started, I did not have any expertise nor even capital. Those were difficult times in my country. Suddenly, I had to leave my parents, relatives, friends, my main job and all my assets accumulated over the years. It was a question of life and death.

From Rwanda, I went to the city of Lusaka in Zambia with a bill of 20 US dollars hidden in the collar of my baby daughter. I sold my own clothes, practiced hard labor to pay for food and transportation. I was running from war and did not have a chance to carry any money on me. Escaping the war zone alive was the most important, the highest priority. That was actually a blessing because almost a million people did not make it.

When I arrived in Lusaka, I observed the way business was being conducted and decided to do something to earn a living for my family. I was with my wife, two young children , Delphine(1.9 years), Clemence (0.6 years) and Gloria, my sister in law (12 years). They needed a shelter, food and medication. We were all sick and in very bad shapes.

I started from the $20 US to rebuild my life and the lives of my family.  I built my business from $0 to $10 thousand in 4 years despite the frequent thefts, physical, violent assaults and unstable local currency.

I approached the Indian merchants who were true experts in business and learned from them. I went through tough challenges with determination. A gave to people whatever I was able to afford and received help from them in return.

I did not have the chance to read books or articles from Experts like Robin Sharma but I tried to survive. Today, I am still keeping that dream alive. Being an entrepreneur is challenging and I know that. However, challenge is what you need if you really want to escape the rat race.

I don’t say it is the only way. I am just saying it is the way I have decided to go for the rest of my life. It is my obsession I might say. This time, it will be a different type of business.
